Panic attacks and phobic responses are frightening episodes where a person is overwhelmed by fear, stress or anxiety. Sufferers experience a variety of symptoms. These can include:

- Pounding heart
- Mind going blank
- Stomach churning
- Trembling or shaking
- Inability to speak
Episodes can be triggered by repeated experiences or, in the case of panic attacks, can occur out of the blue. Sufferers live with the fear of it happening again.
Phobias are triggered by something specific, e.g. heights, flying, spiders, lifts, dentistry, to name a few. They can be based on totally irrational fears, and even though the sufferer may be aware of this, it offers no reassurance.
